Every Friday, Chron’s food team shares a standout dish from their experiences dining out during the week. Follow along to see why we love these Houston eats.

As far as I’m concerned, hummus is where the heart is. There’s something about the velvety texture and subtle chickpea flavor that I can’t resist dipping cucumbers, crackers and all into. Two of my most memorable hummus experiences were at now-shuttered Houston restaurants, Poitín and One Fifth Mediterranean. Both topped their creamy mixture with a generous portion of spiced meat, making for the ultimate dip. With these concepts long gone, I’ve been on the hunt for a worthy replacement.

During a lunch visit to Mary’z Mediterranean, just such a starter caught my eye. Mary’z hummus is a clean, simple blend of chickpeas, olive oil, lemon juice and tahini, amped up with a layer of meat. The choice of protein is yours, but I sprung for beef shawarma, the same meat typically packed into a gyro. Accompanied with pillowy fluffs of fresh, housemade pita bread, Mary’z picture-perfect hummus was a hearty and decadent starter to all that followed.

What else?

Lebanese-born immigrants Mary and Samir Fakhoury opened the restaurant 17 years ago, and it’s still family-run today. Mary’z has been just as popular for parking on the patio with a hookah lamp as it is for its authentic Lebanese eats. In addition to its longtime Richmond home, a newer location on Washington Avenue has made it convenient to satisfy either desire. Regardless of what you order, don’t sleep on the pita bread. Fresh batches emerge consistently from the oven throughout the day, and should not be missed.
