The Astros placed starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi on the 15-day injured list with what they’re calling “lower leg discomfort” before Tuesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. The Astros activated righthanded pitcher Seth Martinez to take Odorizzi’s spot on the roster.

Odorizzi collapsed with a leg injury when he turned to run and cover first base of Monday’s loss to the Red Sox. The 33-year-old was on the ground for nearly 10 minutes before being put on a stretcher and taken off the field. Odorizzi had an MRI on Tuesday, but the Astros have yet to release the results of the scan.

Odorizzi was 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA this season, but he had been even better the past three weeks. In his last four starts, including Monday’s loss in Boston when he suffered the scary injury as Yuli Gurriel was fielding a ground ball for the final out of the fifth inning, Odorizzi has given up just two earned runs for an ERA of 0.79. He had a streak of 19 straight scoreless innings during that three-week stretch.

Martinez already was in Boston with the team as a member of the Astros’ taxi squad. He’s made two relief appearances this season, giving up just one hit and one walk in 2.2 scoreless innings.
