GMC rolls out restyled Sierra, Terrain and variants for 2022

6 min read

General Motors’ GMC brand offers a lineup of stylish, rugged and versatile pickup trucks and a comprehensive selection of SUVs and crossovers for model year 2022, including the versatile Sierra trucks and the Texas-built Yukon large sport utilities.

The Sierra 1500 light-duty pickup line has been revamped and updated for 2022, and the first-ever Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate and AT4X luxury models joins the lineup.

Also coming later this year are the new GMC Hummer electric pickup and SUV models, reviving a brand name General Motors dropped 13 years ago – but this time only as battery-electric vehicles.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 will be the first vehicle in production with GM’s all-new Ultium battery architecture and will offer impressive on- and off-road features and a broad range of vehicle dynamics and performance features, GM says.

“This new architecture provides the framework to integrate advanced technologies for optimal driving range and — in the case of the Hummer EV — will enable performance and capabilities that would not be possible with a conventional vehicle architecture and propulsion system,” the company said.

The 24-module Ultium battery pack and three-motor Ultium Drive system will provide the Hummer EV best-in-class power output, GM says.

“Ultium batteries are unique in the industry because of their large-format, pouch-style cells, which can be stacked vertically or horizontally inside the battery pack,” GM said. “In the Edition 1 Hummer EV, two layers of vertical cell modules will be used to produce a combined 24-module pack offering a GM-estimated range of 329 miles” between charges.

GMC Yukon/Yukon XL

The big GMC sport utilities, the Yukon and longer Yukon XL (corresponding to Chevrolet’s Tahoe and Suburban, respectively), got a complete makeover for 2021 as they entered their newest generation.

The Yukon lineup is headlined by the upscale Denali version and the first-ever Yukon AT4, which gives off-road aficionados a premium ride into the wilderness.

Yukon models have revised styling, upgraded interiors, more connectivity features, additional safety and driver-assist technologies, and their first diesel-engine option.

Yukon XL is the same vehicle as the Yukon, but it’s about 14 inches longer to create more third-row seat space and additional cargo capacity.

With the redesign, there is 10 inches more third-row legroom, along with 60% more cargo room behind the third row, for the shorter Yukon.

There is 19 percent more maximum cargo space behind the first row for the Yukon XL.

These vehicles also have an independent rear suspension paired with available Magnetic Ride Control and first-in-class Air Ride Adaptive Suspension.

Standard is a 355-horsepoer 5.3-liter gasoline V-8 engine. Optional are a 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 with 420 horsepower, and a turbocharged 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine.

All engines come with a 10-speed automatic transmission with pushbutton electronic shift.

These well-equipped large SUVs have seating for up to eight passengers, and plenty of cargo space.

GM’s full-size SUVs are built in the Arlington, Texas, plant.

GMC Sierra 1500/2500/3500

All-new GMC Sierra 1500 pickups debut for 2022, with lots of new technologies — including trailering-capable Super Cruise1 — along with new levels of premium craftsmanship and capability, GMC says.

GMC/GM Design

The 2022 Sierra features an elevated exterior design and all-new, expressive interiors, with enhanced technology integration, including a large, 13.4-inch-diagonal touch screen with Google compatibility.

Its refreshed exterior features a new grille and revised headlights, with expressive lighting animation when approaching, starting or walking away from the vehicle.

The new interior design includes a cockpit-oriented instrument panel along with a new, more functional center console that features electronic precision shift on models with front bucket seats.

The larger touch screen is complemented by a new 12.3-inch-diagonal configurable digital instrument cluster and 15-inch-diagonal multicolor Head-Up Display to provide more than 40 diagonal inches of digital display, the most in its class.

The lineup is led by the new Sierra Denali Ultimate trim, the most advanced and luxuriously appointed Denali model ever and the most advanced and luxurious pickup in its class, the automaker says.

Also in the mix is the Sierra AT4X, which GMC calls “the new peak of premium off-road performance with serious capability and uncompromising refinements.”

Sierra pickups in the light-duty 1500 class and heavy-duty 2500/3500 classes  include regular cab, double cab and crew cab body styles, and all are available with four-wheel drive.

Regular cab models are offered with an eight-foot cargo box; double cab models get six-foot-six boxes; and crew cabs come with either five-foot-eight or six-foot-six boxes.

Denali offers segment-first technologies such as the Multi-Color Head-up Display and Rear Camera Mirror, along with exclusive chassis enhancements such as Adaptive Ride Control and signature design and interior elements.

AT4 models – the Sierra equivalent to the Chevy Silverado Z71 Trail Boss – brings off-road capability, innovative technology, and premium amenities. It has a two-inch factory suspension lift, standard 4WD with a two-speed transfer case, locking rear differential, skid plates, Rancho monotube shocks, 18-inch wheels with all-terrain Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires (20-inch wheels available), Hill Descent Control, Traction Select System, MultiPro Tailgate, exclusive exterior and interior trim, red vertical recovery hooks and a standard 5.3-liter V-8 engine.

GMC Acadia

The GMC Acadia midsize crossover got some changes last year, but returns basically unchanged for 2022.
Versions include the SLE, SLT, 2020’s all-new AT4 premium off-road trim, and GMC’s flagship Denali, with available seating arrangements for five, six or seven passengers, depending on the model.

There is a bold exterior design with standard LED lighting and signature GMC C-shape lighting, complemented with interior refinements.

A 3.6L V-6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 271 foot-pounds of torque, and a twin clutch AWD system are standard to the AT4. Unique 17-inch wheels and all-terrain tires are also standard, with 20-inch wheels available.

Standard on the base model is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine with 193 horsepower and 188 foot-pounds of torque.

GMC Terrain

The five-passenger GMC Terrain compact crossover gets some updates for 2022, and a new model — the first-ever Terrain AT4.

Also new this model year is a refreshed and modernized Denali luxury model.

Trim levels for 2022 include SLE, SLT, AT4 and Denali.

Standard is a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower and 203 foot-pounds of torque.

The Terrain also is offered with a 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with 136 horsepower and 236 foot-pounds of torque.

Prices range as high as $40,000 for the top-of-the-line all-wheel-drive Denali version (the front-drive Denali starts at $37,800), which comes with the 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

In between the SL and Denali are the SLE gasoline front-drive, gasoline AWD, front-drive diesel, and AWD diesel.

Above that level comes the SLT front-drive gasoline model, gasoline AWD, diesel front-drive and diesel AWD.

There is a nine-speed automatic transmission for the gasoline models, while the diesels get six-speed automatics.

GMC Canyon

GMC’s midsize Canyon pickup returned to the lineup for 2015 after a three-year hiatus. A 2.8-liter Duramax diesel engine has been added to the options list, with 181 horsepower and 369 foot-pounds of torque.

New for 2021 was the AT4 premium off-road version, which includes four-wheel drive, off-road tries, automatic-locking differential, transfer-case skid plate, and an off-road suspension.
