Here’s what Will Smith said to Chris Rock that was bleeped out

So far, the 2022 Academy Awards has had its share of highlights, from a Beyoncé performance to a not-so-subtle reference to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. But without a doubt the biggest moment so far happened in a seemingly unscripted fight between presenter Chris Rock and nominee Will Smith.

Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith starring in a ficticious sequel to the 1997 film “G.I. Jane,” based on the fact that she arrived with a shaved head, similar to star Demi Moore’s look in the film. Pinkett Smith has been outspoken about her struggle with hair loss, and her husband did not take the joke in stride.

Smith walked onto the stage and appeared to hit Rock in the face. It was hard to tell if the moment was a scripted gag, but shortly after the hit, the audio in the broadcast cut out as Rock and Smith had a testy moment.

Buzzfeed News reporter David Mack, who is based in Australia, saw an uncensored version that included the full exchange between Smith and Rock. He shared an unedited video clip, which reveals exactly what happened.

“Will Smith just smacked the s—t out of me,” Rock said.

Smith, back at his seat, screamed twice for Rock to “keep my wife’s name out of your f—king mouth.” The look on Smith’s face, not seen in the American broadcast, implies that he’s not joking around. Rock replied incredulously that it was just a G.I. Jane joke, then Sean “Puffy” Combs tried to defuse the situation as he took the stage following Rock.

A few minutes later, Will Smith received the Oscar for best actor for his role in “King Richard.” In his acceptance speech, he began by stating that Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family, then went on to discuss his outburst earlier in the show.

“I know to do what we do, you’ve gotta be able to take abuse. You’ve gotta be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you’ve gotta be able to have people disrespecting you. And you’ve gotta smile and pretend like that’s okay.

“Denzel said to me a few minutes ago, at your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you…”

“I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees.”

With tears rolling down his face, Smith continued to reference many others who contributed to the film, but he notably did not apologize to Chris Rock.
