Jim Thome’s wife dominating Twitter after canceling Browns season tickets over Deshaun Watson trade

Andrea Thome, the wife of Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Thome, has been fighting Twitter trolls ever since she announced her family was canceling their Cleveland Browns season tickets as a form of protest against the Deshaun Watson trade. She’s taking out the bad-faith actors in the best way possible: Never losing her cool, answering any questions or doubts they may have and fact-checking them at every turn.

While Watson faces no criminal charges, there are civil lawsuits from 22 women who claim he acted inappropriately during massage sessions with accusations including exposing himself, touching them with his penis, kissing them against their will, ejaculating on them and forced oral sex.

Thome said the Browns refunded her money Monday and she will be donating “every red cent to organizations in Cleveland that protect women.”

Thome said she had the tweet sitting in her drafts folder ever since the Watson trade was announced, but waited until she cooled off before she posted it and she wanted to let it be known publicly so she could “shine a light on women in crisis.

Since her initial tweet, Thome has sent more than 60 replies to both people who are criticizing her and her family and to those who have shown support.

Thome also posted a note sent to her by someone who claims to be one of Watson’s alleged victims, thanking her for taking a stand.

“I wouldn’t wish the last 48 hours on anyone, but this letter is why it was worth it,” Thome posted on Twitter on Monday. “I stand by my decision and none of threats, name-calling, false-accusations or character assassination makes any difference. Other people’s opinion of me is none of my business.”

After receiving plenty of hate from Browns fans, Thome also posted: “A final word. I never called anyone guilty. 22 accusers. That’s enough for me to make a decision that I have every right to make without being incessantly bullied by keyboard warriors. I’m stepping away for a week, but I wish you all peace. Grateful for all of the support.”

There also were more than a few trolls who were curious if she and Jim Thome supported Donald Trump as president since he also faced numerous sexual misconduct allegations. In numerous tweets, Thome said neither she or Jim voted for Trump.

Another Twitter troll thought they had Thome cornered by pointing out that she competed as Miss Ohio in the 1993 Miss USA pageant, which the troll thought was owned by Donald Trump at the time. As Thome correctly points out, the pageant was run by Dick Clark Productions when she was involved and later bought by Trump in 1996.

Jim Thome, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018, hit 612 career home runs, good enough for eighth-best all-time, in 22 seasons with the Indians, Phillies, White Sox, Twins, Dodgers and Orioles. Andrea, who was a Cleveland news anchor before getting married, and Jim have three children and have been married 23 years.
