Matthew McConaughey returns to hometown of Uvalde to pay respects to shooting victims

2 min read

Matthew McConaughey returned to his hometown of Uvalde, Texas on Friday to pay his respects to the victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting. The 52-year-old Oscar winner posed for a photo with school staff three days after the mass shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

McConaughey did not speak with members of the press during his visit, according to Fox News. The “Dallas Buyers Club” actor was born in Uvalde and his mother worked as a teacher at a school just a mile away from Robb Elementary.

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), whose congressional district represents Uvalde, thanked McConaughey for his visit on Twitter Friday, writing: “This week was a solemn reminder that evil exists in the world, but we will never let it break us,” he posted. “We’ll unite to be an even more powerful reminder that love never fails & together we can change things. Appreciate Uvalde native Matthew McConaughey helping us heal.”

Following news of the massacre Tuesday, McConaughey took to social media to call for changes to gun laws in the country, writing “once again, we have tragically proven that we are failing to be responsible for the rights our freedoms grant us.”

He added that gun violence is “an epidemic we can control” and called for Americans to “re-evaluate and renegotiate our wants from our needs” and to “find common ground above this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children’s issue.”

“We must do better,” McConaughey wrote. “Action must be taken so that no parent has to experience what the parents in Uvalde and the others before them have endured.” McConaughey’s wife, Camila Alves, also posted his message on her Instagram account.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the town was also visited by British royal family member Meghan Markle as she paid her respects for the 21 victims. The Duchess of Sussex was spotted Thursday placing a bouquet of white roses at a memorial for the victims.
