Ranking Texans home games from must-see to ‘Nah, I’m good’

3 min read

If you’re a Traveling Texans fan, this 2022 schedule is just about perfect with trips to some of the most desirable stops in the league, including New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Chicago and Denver. There’s also that road game against the Cowboys, but no one really WANTS to spend any time in Arlington.

The home schedule isn’t nearly as good, although it is highlighted by a possible Deshaun Watson return to Houston and a prime-time game against the Eagles.

We took the eight home games on the Texans’ schedule – for which tickets are on sale now – and ranked them from worst to best …

‘Nah, I’m good’

vs. Jaguars, noon Sunday, Jan. 1
It’s hard to imagine a less consequential game than the Texans and Jaguars meeting in the penultimate week of the regular season. This will be one of those games where you can get a ticket on the secondary market for the price of a box of Shipley donuts.

Not great, but at least they don’t come here often

vs. Commanders, noon Sunday, Nov. 20
The Washington Commanders are unlikely to be a very good football team, but if you want to see them, this is your shot. This will be just the third time Washington has played the Texans in Houston and the first since 2014.

Quality opponents

vs. Colts, noon Sunday, Sept. 11
vs. Chargers, noon Sunday, Oct. 2
vs. Chiefs, noon Sunday, Dec. 18
The Texans got dominated by the Colts by a combined score of 62-3 in two games last season and haven’t fared much better against the Chiefs. The Texans actually upset the Chargers in the best game Houston played all last year. Even if you’re not a Texans fan, these games offer the opportunity to see quarterbacks like the Chargers’ Justin Herbert and Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes or Colts running back Jonathan Taylor.

Rivalry week

vs. Titans, 3:05 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30
No matter how long it’s been since the Oilers left Houston, the Tennessee Titans will never be welcomed inside 610, especially when the quarterback warms up in his Oilers shirt, like Ryan Tannehill did last season. This game also could have a little extra juice with the 3:05 p.m. kickoff, which means you don’t have to start drinking before noon. I mean … do you, and get started whenever you want, but you don’t HAVE to start so early for this one.

Prime time

vs. Eagles, 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3
Every team is guaranteed at least one prime time game and for the third straight season, the Texans get the minimum. At least this one’s at home – as was last season’s Thursday night game against the Panthers. That 24-9 loss to Carolina was pretty dull to watch, but there’s still something about night games in the NFL that bring a little extra energy.

Must-see

vs. Browns, noon Sunday, Dec. 4
We see you working, NFL. You saved the Browns-Texans game for Week 13, which should be late enough in the season for Deshaun Watson to still play after an expected suspension from the NFL. Hopefully, the Texans are playing decently good enough football heading into December that fans still care and will give Watson the booing of his lifetime.
