Houston’s Lizzo started off the First We Feast “Hot Ones” challenge full of confidence. However, by the end of the near 25-minute episode, the three-time Grammy winner could be seen fighting tears and fanning herself due to the increasing spice levels.

The 34-year-old “Cuz I Love You” singer appeared Thursday on the hit YouTube series, which challenges celebrity guests to eat wings covered in increasingly spicy sauces while answering questions from host Sean Evans. Lizzo took on the challenge her own way, swapping out traditional buffalo wings for her preferred vegan option.

Rocking a hot pink wig with a matching pink leopard print outfit head-to-toe, Lizzo first confidently predicted that since she’s a fan of spicy food, especially Hot Cheetos, the challenge was going to be “a piece of f–kin’ cake.” She was wrong. By her eighth wing, dabbed with the show’s notorious “Da Bomb Beyond Insanity” sauce, Lizzo was overwhelmed by the spice. She chased her vegan wing with a vegan milkshake, which she chugged down between shouts of “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!” before she tossed her last bite of it across the room.

Despite the struggle, Lizzo was able to answer host Evans’ in-depth questions about her July release “Special,” including how she chose the singles for the project. “I’m so bad at picking singles for myself because I think everything I do is incredible, I really do,” Lizzo responded, after revealing that the album’s hit lead single “About Damn Time” almost didn’t make it.

Lizzo said she wasn’t a fan of the song before it was finished but changed her mind once it was done. She realized, she said, that its messaging was important for the world to hear. “The ‘I’ve been so down and under pressure, I’m way too fine to be this stressed’—it’s like, hello! We needed that right then when I dropped that motherf–ker,” she said about the track, which went on to become her second Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, repeating the success of “Truth Hurts,” which was released in 2017 but hit the top of the charts in 2019.

During her “Hot Ones” episode, Lizzo also discussed the impact of the music scene in Minneapolis on her career and how her training in classical music shapes her sound. “I make pop music, but I like to think I make really musical, interesting pop music, that I think a lot about the composition,” she said. “Understanding the time signature you’re in—harmony and dissonance and rhythm and cadence—I think it is important.”

The musician managed to power through the challenge to end with a little help from some vegan ice cream to tame the heat. “We did it,” Lizzo said triumphantly, adding “this was the highest on my list of goals.”

Fans in the show’s comments praised Lizzo’s bravery and Evans’ questions in the interview. “I was crying laughing at this, Lizzo is a great guest but Sean is a legendary interviewer as well. What a dream combo!” commented one person on YouTube. “Lizzo is actually a real one wow,’ commented another. “Love this show because I actually feel like I understand what these celebrities are really like afterwards.”
