Owen Woodward – the Weatherford College pitcher who sprinted across the diamond and speared a batter who had just hit a go-ahead home run off him Wednesday – has been kicked off the team. Woodward, a reliever who led his team with four saves and had 30 strikeouts in 20.1 innings, is signed to play at the University of Houston. Cougars coach Todd Whitting told the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte the school is “monitoring the situation.”

North Central Texas College’s Josh Phillips, who played at Cypress’ Bridgeland High School, has been suspended two games despite being the player who was attacked. The Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference (NTJCAC) dealt Phillips the suspension for taunting. According to the umpires, Phillips was warned earlier in the game when he exchanged words with a different pitcher. After hitting the home run, umpires allege Phillips yelled, “F— you” to Woodward, which sparked the attack.

The NTJCAC also gave two-game suspensions to any players and assistant coaches who left their position or the dugout or bullpen to join in the fracas. That meant every North Central Texas College player except for two was suspended, while four other Weatherford players were punished.

The game was the first of a four-game series. The conference ruled that first game, which was halted after the fight, will be ruled a forfeit for both teams. North Central Texas College will forfeit the next two games due to a lack of available players, and the final game of the series will be played Saturday.
